Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), also known as birch conk, is a mushroom that primarily grows on birch trees in colder climates of the Northern Hemisphere, including Russia, Canada, Scandinavia, and parts of North America.
It is easily recognised by its distinctive dark, almost black, crust-like appearance - resembling burnt wood. Chaga is a parasitic fungus that draws nutrients from its host tree, and its growth is a slow process, often taking 5 to 7 years or longer to fully mature.
The name "chaga" originates from the Russian word чага (čága), meaning "mushroom". In Siberia, it was traditionally known as “God’s gift” due to its many reputed benefits.
Chaga also has a long-standing role in Chinese herbal tradition, where it is used to support vitality and promote balance within the body.
